Hey, Knoxvil— a short local read, twice a week, written by a person who lives here. No filler, no fake authority, no “discover hidden gems.”

Two issues a week. Tuesday morning, Saturday morning. We’re going to get a lot wrong in the first month and we’ll fix it as we go. If you have a friend who’d want this in their inbox, forward it. Word of mouth is how we grow.

Let’s go.

NEWS — what’s worth knowing

The Market Square Farmers Market is back Saturday. Year 24 of the market kicks off May 2, 8am–1pm, and runs every Wednesday and Saturday through November. Same vendors, same produce-and-baked-goods rhythm, plus a few new artisan stalls this season. Worth the early alarm.

Earl’s, the new restaurant on the South Waterfront, has been open since January. Locally owned, river-facing, and apparently the patio is the move when the weather cooperates. We haven’t been yet — going this weekend, we’ll report back Saturday.

Abridged Beer Company is hiring for an open. The new brewery is targeting a late-April / early-May launch and was actively recruiting front-of-house and kitchen staff this month. Add it to the watchlist.

[VERIFY: Earl’s still operating, hours] [VERIFY: Abridged opening date — confirm this week]

THIS WEEK — events worth your time

Friday, May 1 — Black Jacket Symphony at Knoxville Civic Auditorium. [VERIFY: time]

Friday, May 1 — Nate Jackson at Tennessee Theatre. Comedy. [VERIFY: time and price]

Saturday, May 2 — Luke Combs with Dierks Bentley at Neyland Stadium. Plus Ty Myers, Jake Worthington, Thelma & James. The biggest concert of the spring. Traffic on Cumberland will be brutal — plan accordingly.

Saturday, May 2 — Market Square Farmers Market opens for season 24. 8am–1pm. Free. Bring a tote.

First Friday of the month — ArtWalk. Galleries and businesses across downtown open exhibitions and pour drinks, 5–9pm, free. Easiest entry point if you’ve never done a downtown gallery night.

THE FEATURE — what we’re watching

Knoxville’s restaurant moment, briefly explained.

You’ve probably noticed: there are more new openings in the Old City and on the South Waterfront than this town has seen in a decade. Why now?

Two reasons. The first is infrastructure — the multi-use stadium and greenway expansions have shifted foot traffic patterns enough that previously sleepy blocks are suddenly viable. The second is timing: leases signed during the 2024 lull are coming online now, and operators who waited it out are betting on the next 12 months being good.

What this means for you: more options, fewer reservations on weeknights, and the rare moment in a city’s life when most of the new spots are still affordable. Use it.

We’ll feature a different new opening every two weeks. First up Saturday: Earl’s.

ONE LINE

If you’ve never walked the Sequoyah Hills loop on a Sunday afternoon, fix that this weekend. The dogwoods are doing their thing.

That’s it for the first one. Tuesday issues run news + events; Saturday issues lean into the weekend feature. Both stay short.

If you got value from this, forward it to one Knoxvillian friend. If you didn’t, reply and tell me why — I read every email.

See you Saturday.
